The singer whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, will be responsible for promoting education, tourism and investment in the island.
Premier Mia Mottley said the government was honored to be able to award the title to the Barbadian who has made a significant contribution to raising the island’s image in the world.
“Rihanna deeply loves this country and this is reflected in her philanthropic works, especially in the areas of health and education. She also shows her patriotism by giving much of her fame to her country and cherishing the island as her home. “
“She has also shown, beyond her success as a pop icon, a creative sense and finesse in business. So it made sense for us to engage him and encourage him to play a more definitive role in our mission to transform Barbados, “the minister said in an official publication.
Rihanna was appointed cultural ambassador for Barbados in 2008, doing advocacy work on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism. However, this expanded role reflects its multidimensional achievements and global influence.
In accepting her new role, Ambassador Fenty said she was ready to play her part in creating a new Barbados.
“I could not be more proud of getting such a prestigious title in my homeland. Every Barbadian will have to play his part in this current effort, and I am ready and eager to shoulder my responsibilities. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mottley and his team to reinvent Barbados, “she said.
