The role of Jesus Christ will now be played by a black man!
The artist has just been selected to play the role of Jesus for the Jesus Christ Superstar show aired on NBC on Easter Sunday (April 1, 2018).
The production of the live event that will last three hours will be produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and John Legend will join a talented cast that includes Alice Cooper as King Herod.
“It’s a powerful and meaningful musical and I’m honored to be part of this performance. We have already formed an incredible team, and by the end of the casting, I’m sure we’ll bring some of the best talent together to do justice to this work, “ Legend told Deadline.
This is the last live broadcast of NBC’s list of television musicals, with recent productions such as Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and The Wiz.
The live event on NBC is inspired by the 1971 Broadway musical on the last week of Jesus’ life.
John Legend has a long list of achievements as a producer and performer. He won a Tony Award earlier this year as a producer of “Jitney” by August Wilson. He also won an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy in 2015 for his song with Common, “Glory,” from the movie, “Selma.”
Legend was also a producer on the highly acclaimed musical film, “The Land” in 2016, and also appeared in the film. He recently wrote songs for Broadway’s “SpongeBob SquarePants”.
