Senegal was eliminated from the FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Saturday after defeat to South Korea on penalties at the Bielsko-Biala Stadium in Bielsko-Biała, Poland.

Despite the Koreans missing their first two spot-kicks, Senegal lost 3-2 on penalties after the game ended 3-3 after extra time.

Captain Cavin Diagne gave Senegal a first-half lead eight minutes before halftime with a close-range finish.

South Korea equalised in the 62nd minute when Lee Kangin converted a penalty after Lee Jisol was fouled in the penalty box.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded Senegal a penalty seven minutes later after deciding that Lee Jaeik handled the ball in the penalty area. Lee Gwangyeon saved the first effort by Ibrahima Niane but the penalty was retaken as Gwangyeon was judged to have come off his line too soon. Gwangyeon was subsequently booked and Niane scored the retaken penalty.

Jisol sent the game into extra time when his header found the back of the net in the eighth minute of injury time.

Korea took the lead in the sixth minute of extra time through Cho Youngwook but Senegal leveled in the 121st minute through Amadou Ciss.

In the penalty shootout, following Korea’s first two misses, Oh Sehun scored their final attempt while captain Diagne blazed over for Senegal.

South Korea will now face Ecuador in the semifinal in Lubin on Tuesday, June 11.
