The current senior vice president of NBC News and MSNBC, Rashida Jones, is expected to be named MSNBC’s new president early next year.
She will take over for longtime President Phil Griffin starting in February and in doing so, she will become the first Black female leader of a cable news network
In a memo published by The Wrap, NBCUniversal News group Chairman Cesar Conde announced Griffin’s plans to depart from MSNBC next year and Jones’ new role as president.
“Rashida knows and understands MSNBC, in part because it’s where she started when she first joined NBCU seven years ago,” Conde wrote in the memo. “She knows that it is the people who work here that make it great, and she understands its culture. She also appreciates the impact and potential of the brand.”
Conde said this year that he wants half of the company’s staff to be women and half to be people of color, according to NBC News.
Jones, a Hampton University graduate, worked as director of live programming at The Weather Channel and as the news director for the NBC affiliate in Columbia, SC before coming to MSNBC.
