Sharks attacked migrants from overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean. At least 31 died and 200 were saved after being attacked by sharks during their perilous journey between Africa and Italy, said the Libyan navy.
“Many bodies have had dead blue shark bite marks with some of the killer fish spotted nearby,” said the Navy on its Facebook page.
18 women and 3 children are among the dead while 40 people are still missing.
The message said, ” We found dozens of bodies floating in the water and two small boats with hundreds of people piled on board and others clinging or trying to get on board to escape the sharks.”
A sailor told the Italian newspaper Il Giorno:
“There were a lot of bodies around and we saw that there were four or five sharks swimming among them, great blue sharks, a very aggressive species. When we brought the bodies on board, we noticed that some of them had been bitten, so it is possible that some of the missing were eaten. “
The stranded migrants were found 40 miles off the coast of North Africa and headed for southern Italy or Malta.
