New Image of Gabon’s President Ali Bongo Surfaces from Morocco

The latest image of Gabon’s president Ali Bongo has surfaced also two months after he took medical leave.

The Moroccan Royal Palace issued a hand out picture of King Mohammed VI sitting next to Bongo who was smiling at him and dressed in a turban and djellaba robe.

The Moroccan ruler visited Bongo at a military hospital in Rabat where the Gabonese leader is recovering from an illness.

Bongo’s wife last week said he was travelling to Morocco to continue his recovery.

During the visit, the king said he was pleased about the state of Bongo’s health which he said was getting better by the day, according to the Moroccan source.

No one, however, has shared specific details on Bongo’s condition.

After an extended period of silence, the Gabonese presidency eventually admitted last month that Bongo was “seriously ill” and had undergone surgery, but said he was on the mend.

A lack of official news, along with memories of the secrecy that shrouded death of Bongo’s father Omar Bongo in 2009 after decades at the helm, had sparked numerous rumours, including speculation he was incapacitated or even dead.

Gabon’s top court last month ruled that the vice president would chair the cabinet in Bongo’s absence.
