The numbers of poor people in Namibia down as per the preliminary results of the Namibia household income and expenditure survey for the period of 2015 and 2016 carried out by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).
According to Xinhua the survey shows that about 5.8 percent of the 2.3 million people in Namibia live in extreme poverty, less compared to the 7.3 percent recorded in the 2009 to 2010 survey. The extreme poor population are the people that are not able to spend 20 US dollars on basic necessities.
The percentage of the poor who live with a disposable income of 36 US dollars is 18 percent of the population compared to the 28 percent in the previous survey.
The Statistician general Alex Shimuafeni beleieves the indicators show that government initiatives to eradicate poverty by 2025 are working.
