It has been a week since the fund raising was launched by the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial. As our colleagues from Apanews point out, the purpose of this fundraising is to build a Thomas Sankara memorial, whose cost is estimated at 5 billion CFA francs.
Today, the amount already collected is exactly 1 billion 23 million 195 thousand CFA 527.
According to Touwendinda Zongo the Deputy Secretary-General of the Committee, this amount represents exclusively the subscriptions made on the day of the launch of the campaign on 2 October 2017. This sum represents the contributions from officials, economic operators, citizens, diplomatic representations, civil society leaders, the Burkinabe diaspora, and some delegates from neighboring countries and friends of Burkina Faso.
The secretary of the Deputy General Committee added that ” it is also very interesting to mention that the funds raised by the subscription tools such as the boxes of piggy banks, Orangemoney numbers, Mobicash and the Ecobank account are not taken into account. account in this point “.
A press conference was organized by the International Memorial Committee not only to account for entries that were recorded, but also to launch the architectural competition for the construction of the masterpiece.
The committee finally invited the people to a march on 15 October 2017, the date of the commemoration of the 30 th anniversary of the assassination of Thomas Sankara, father of the Burkinabe Revolution.
But several questions divide the Africans on the cost of the memorial to build to pay tribute to Thomas Sankara. Do we have to spend billions to build a memorial of Thomas Sankara in a poor country like Burkina Faso? Should not the cost be reduced and much of the money spent on development projects in the country? Does the cost of this memorial fit in with the ideology of Thomas Sankara during his lifetime? Would Sankara have agreed that we spend so much money building a memorial if he was still alive?
