Obama captioned screenshots of an exchange between her and her mother, Marian Robinson, that she shared on Instagram, writing: “When your mom doesn’t think you’re a ‘real’ celebrity…Tonight in Phoenix, I shared this text thread from my mom from #Grammys night, and I just had to share it with all of you. #TextsFromMom.”
In the exchange, Robinson begins by writing: “I guess you were a hit at the Grammys.”
“I’m sitting here with Valerie and this text is so typically you. Did you watch it?!” Obama replied.
“I saw it because Gracie called me. Did you meet any of the real stars or did you run right after you were done,” her mother said in response.
“I told you I was going to be on it,” Obama responded.
Her mother shot back: “No you did not. I would have remembered that even though I don’t remember much.”
Obama then responds with a series of laughing emojis, writing: “I thought I told you.”
“And I am a real star…by the way,” she added.
“Yeah,” her mother replied, to which the former first lady responded with a single heart emoji.
Obama surprised millions on Sunday night when she joined singer Alicia Keys on stage along with Jada Pinkett Smith, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez at the awards show.
During the ceremony, Obama discussed the power of music and how it allows Americans to “hear one another, to invite each other in.”
“Music shows us that all of it matters — every story within every voice, every note within every song,” she added.
