Meghan Markle: Why Kate Middleton Family Given Coat of Arms But Meghan’s Family Was Not

Meghan Markle received a coat of arms earlier this week in honour of her marrying into the royal family, in an age old tradition. It differed from Kate Middleton’s coat of arms, which was granted to her father and created for her family. Meghan’s, however, was designed just for her and not given to her father.

The official Royal UK website page for Meghan Markle has been updated to show her acting career.

Meghan is most famous for starring in US legal drama Suits which has been detailed on the page.

It reads: “After university Her Royal Highness worked as an actress, appearing in film and television.

“She most notably played the role of Rachel Zane on the series Suits for seven seasons, completing over 100 episodes.”

A royal expert has said Meghan Markle’s tights at the garden party for Prince Charles’ 70th birthday showed her royal “transformation”.

The tights were proof of Meghan’s “transformation” into a royal, former royal butler Grant Harrold told The style choice is known to be customary of royal women.

Grant explained the significance of Meghan’s decision to wear tights now she is officially a member of British royalty.

He said: “As I said in the past we will see a transformation of the new Duchess within the coming months and years.

“Wearing tights is what royal ladies do and I was pleased to see she has adopted this practice.

Meghan Markle is said to have broken royal protocol when she saw Chelsy Davy, Prince Harry’s ex girlfriend, at the royal wedding.

The Duchess of Sussex gave Chelsy a hug at the wedding reception, even though “correct” etiquette would be for Chelsy – who does not know Meghan well – to curtsey.

Prince Harry, 33, dated Chelsy for seven years from 2004 to 2011 – after they first met in Cape Town on Harry’s gap year, and she is widely thought to have been his first love.

Meghan’s family was not given a coat of arms, like the Middleton family did after Kate Middleton’s wedding.

This is a break from royal tradition, whereby a royal is given a coat of arms representing her family, which is then given to her father.

For instance, Kate Middleton, 36, and her family, the Middletons, were gifted a coat of arms representing the immediate family members.

There is an acorn representing Kate and her two siblings, Pippa and James, and a gold band representing her mother’s Carole’s maiden name, Goldsmith.

No statement has been made by Kensington Palace as to why Meghan’s father Thomas Markle, 73, did not receive a coat of arms

However, reports have suggested it would be too “complicated” to award a coat of arms to Thomas, who famously did not attend the royal wedding, reportedly due to emergency heart surgery.

Mr Markle will not have his own coat of arms. “We were told it would be too ‘complicated’,” an insider told Daily Mail.

“The Palace has instructed us to use the example of the Duchess of Gloucester and give Meghan Markle her own coat of arms instead.”

Thomas was also covered in the media in the week leading up to the wedding, after he admitted to staging paparazzi photos.

Meghan’s coat of arms is said to have been approved by both the Queen and Mr Thomas Woodcock, the Garter King of Arms and Senior Herald in England.

It ties together a number of elements which represent Meghan, according to a statement on the Royal UK website.

The statement reads: “Her Royal Highness worked closely with the College of Arms throughout the design process to create a Coat of Arms that was both personal and representative.

“The blue background of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean off the California coast, while the two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the sunshine of The Duchess’s home state.

“The three quills represent communication and the power of words.”

Earlier this week, it was revealed Prince Harry has vowed to meet his father-in-law Thomas Markle.

It is unknown when the meeting will take place, but it will apparently be “soon”.

This would be the first time Prince Harry meets his wife’s father, who divorced the Suits star’s mother Doria when Meghan was just six years old.

“I hear one of the things they want to do sooner than later – and now that they’re married – is to go and see Thomas Markle, who is recovering from a heart operation,” said Katie Nicholl, royal expert and author of Harry: Life, Loss and Love, told Entertainment Today.

However, it would appear the exact time of the trip has not yet been scheduled.

“We don’t know when this trip might happen. …I’m hearing from people close to Meghan and Harry that they’re very keen to do it, added Katie.
