Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been getting closer now that the former actress is getting adjusted to royal life, so that pretty much means the Duchess of Cambridge is a shoo-in to be maid of honor at the May 19 royal wedding, right? Unfortunately, not really.
Markle reportedly hasn’t chosen her future in-law as her right-hand for her big day, a source told Entertainment Tonight. Instead, the bride-to-be will “choose one of her closest friends who has stood by her for many years before meeting Harry.”
The insider didn’t specify who Markle chose. But one likely guess is Jessica Mulroney, her best friend who helped her and Harry hide from paparazzi when news of their romance first made news in 2016.
The news shouldn’t come as a shock. Despite their budding friendship, Markle and Middleton have only known each other for a year. (They reportedly met in January 2017.) It’s understandable that the former Suits star would want a closer friend by her side on her wedding day. After all, Middleton chose her sister, Pippa, as her maid of honor, when she married Prince William in 2011.
The two are also “quite different people and that have quite different interests,” royal expert Kate Nicholl told InStyle this month. Markle is also said to be “quite independent,” “very confident,” and “keen to establish her own network of friends” in London.
“So that’s certainly not to say she’s snubbed Kate in any way,” Nicholl added. “I think they do spend time together. But I think Meghan’s keen not to rely too much on Kate and to have her own friends as well.”
It was unlikely that the Duchess of Cambridge would’ve been in Markle’s bridal party to begin with. Middleton is “the future queen consort when William becomes king after his father, and would unlikely be an attending person to another royal bride,” royal expert Marlene Koenig revealed in December.
On a technical level, the title of “maid of honor” is reserved for single women. If Middleton did end up taking the role, she would be Markle’s “matron of honor.”
“But it’s unlikely for Catherine to do this,” Koenig added. “She was not a matron of honor, even at her sister’s wedding.”

It was reported in January that Markle had already chosen her maid of honor, but we likely won’t find out who’s landed the role until her big day arrives.
