Meet Virgil Abloh: the African-American Appointed Louis Vuitton’s Menswear Artistic Director

Virgil Abloh, the founder of streetwear brand Off-White and Kanye West’s creative director, has been named the new menswear designer for French fashion label Louis Vuitton.

Black excellence can never go unmentioned. History has been made by Ghanaian-American Virgil Abloh as he has been appointed as the first black artistic director for the luxurious French brand.

Before being made the Men’s Artistic director for Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh was the creative designer for Kanye West. He is the man behind the killer streetwear from Off-White. With the new appointment, his career is set for a completely new atmosphere and realm in the fashion industry.

Speaking to the New York Times, Abloh said that he “felt elated” and that the opportunity was “always a goal in my wildest dreams”. Abloh is one of the few black designers who are in the top echelons of the French fashion house.

Abloh will present his first menswear collection for Louis Vuitton in June at Paris Fashion Week. Louis Vuitton chief executive Michael Burke praised the designer’s “sensibility towards luxury and savoir-faire” adding he would be “instrumental in taking Louis Vuitton’s menswear into the future”.

Abloh was born in Ghana but moved to the United States when his parents emigrated there. His success is an example of how black people are breaking the colour barriers in the fashion world dominated by the whites.

This being the world of high fashion, Abloh’s appointment has not been without controversy. Critics have accused him of building off of others’ designs rather than creating his own.
