Meet Nadia Comăneci, The 14-Yr-Old Olympic Gymnast Who Scored The First Perfect 10

If you’re a gymnastics nut, you’ve probably heard Nadia Comăneci’s name before. At the age of 14, Romanian Gymnast made her Olympic debut at the 1976 Montreal Summer Games. Prior to this point, no Olympian gymnast had managed to score a perfect 10 – in fact, such a score was considered impossible at the time — but that would change with her compulsory routine on the uneven bars.

And, like most groundbreaking moments in history, Comăneci’s achievement arrived with some confusion.

In her opening event in Montreal, her 30-second routine on the uneven bars was so perfect that the judges awarded her a 10, only to discover that there was no way to display the score on the board. To the initial confusion of the crowd, the board flashed up “1.00” instead.

Comăneci went on to earn six more perfect scores at Montreal, leading to three gold medals (uneven bars, balance beam, all-around), one silver medal (team), and one bronze medal (floor exercise).
