Meet Karabo Mogane The First African Singer To Record For Disney Junior

Idols South Africa 2015 champion Karabo Mogane has history by becoming the first African singer to record a proudly South African version of the theme song for Disney Junior’s new hit animated series, The Lion Guard

The brand new TV series that will be aired on DStv channel 309 is inspired by everyone’s favourite Disney classic, The Lion King.

The Lion Guard introduces viewers to Kion, Simba and Nala’s second-born cub who assumed the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a group of the bravest and brightest, tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. Instead of assembling a team of young lions to serve with him, Kion challenged tradition by calling upon friends he believes are the best choices for the job: Bunga, a fearless honey badger; Fuli, a confident cheetah; Beshte, a happy-go-lucky hippo; and Ono, an intellectual egret. Stories will include special appearances by Mufasa, Timon, Pumba, Rafiki, Zazu and Kion’s older sister, Kiara, the future Queen of the Pride Lands.

The theme track, Here comes the Lion Guard, was written by long-time Disney collaborator Beau Black and features the same African djembe drum beats and Swahili nuances that made the previous two Lion King soundtracks so popular. Could we ever forget?

Now, our very own Idols SA 2015 winner gets to be part of history!

Mogane chatted to DESTINY about his experience: “The experience was absolutely fantastic, it took me back to the days when I grew up watching The Lion King and now with the new series is coming out, for me to part of it… that’s huge! I am truly blessed to find myself in a position to record a theme song for the actual show. Kids, in fact, people all over the world will get to hear it and know ‘that’s Karabo singing’.”

On partnering with Disney, Mogane admits that to be associated with a brand of this magnitude means that many more doors will be opened for him from this point forward.

He also chatted about the success of his Idols SA journey: “It’s been an amazing experience, and looking at how people have received my album, I can truly say that I have great support. People still stop me to comment on the album and to tell me that they’re hoping it will reach gold and platinum by the end of the year.”

Mogane is excited about the future, but for now he’s planning a show in Nelspruit on 4 June, with possible guests Judith Sephuma and his Idols SA friends, Dineo Moseki and Lungisa Xhamela. Official details will be made public soon!

Tune your tellies to The Lion Guard every weekday on Disney Junior (Channel 309) at 6.30pm.
