A massive donkey living in a British animal sanctuary is set to become the biggest in the world.

Derrick, the enormous young animal stands at a staggering 16.3 Hands (5ft 7ins) tall -and isn’t finished growing yet.

The five-year-old belongs to the American Mammoth Jackstock breed, which is the largest type of donkey in the world.

Five-year-old Derrick the donkey with volunteer pal Tyler Allen-Day, 12. The jack is set to set the world’s biggest donkey… if he can grow just over one more inch taller

But to claim the crown, Derrick grow an inch (literally) to beat current record holder Romulus, who lives in Texas and measures 17 Hands high – (5ft 8ins).

Derrick towers over the sanctuary’s smallest member of staff, Tyler Allen-Day, who is just 5ft tall.

The 12-year-old has worked as a volunteer looking after the giant donkey and the other animals for the past two years.

At only a few centimeters short his owners say he will easily become a world record holder before he enters old age.

Sanctuary owner Tracy Garton said: ‘He was always big, he was big when he was born.

‘He hasn’t finished growing yet, they stop growing when they reach seven years old.

The gentle giant stands at a staggering 16.3 Hands (5ft 7ins) tall and still has another year of expected growth left to go before he plateaus out aged seven.

Living a diet of mixed vegetables has so far proved a winning formula for the American Mammoth Jackstock breed donkey

‘So he still has a lot of time.’

‘He’s just like a big dog, follows you around all the time and wants to be by your side.’

When Derrick stops growing, the sanctuary have said they will call in Guinness World Records.

Romulus has held the title since 2013, but is set to lose the crown once Derrick finishes growing.
