Ladies, Here are 10 Signs He is the One You Should Marry

He’s got gorgeous eyes and a knee-shaking smile. He buys you flowers and cooks you dinner, and he even watches Gilmore Girls with you (he probably likes it a little, but he won’t admit it). You’re totally in love, and you’re sure he feels the same way. So, how do you know if it’s time to make the big commitment? As the old cliché goes, there’s never a right time for marriage, and a long time can be a little daunting – of course you want to be sure you’re making the right choice! Good looks, a cool job, and a nice car may seem to be great qualities for a boyfriend, but what makes someone husband material? The bar is a lot higher. We’ve sat down, interviewed friends, family, and long-term married couples, and come up with the top ten definitive ways to know if he is the one you should marry.

He likes your family, and your family likes him

Your family knows you better than anyone else in the world does, and they know who is going to be compatible with you. Your family knows what your flaws and strengths are, and they can see when a guy’s traits complement your own. Your family is also an extension of you – it’s important that your boyfriend appreciates your family, and wants to spend time with them. It means he’s interested in being a part of your whole life, and not just the parts that he already fits into. So, if your boyfriend starts making suggestions about Friday night dinners at your mom’s place – he’s a keeper.

He takes good care of your pets

It’s often said that animals are great judges of character – so why not put him to the test with yours? If your himalayan starts nuzzling your man’s hand, that’s an excellent sign. More important, though, is that your boyfriend makes an effort with your pets. For many of us, our pets are our kids – and we come as a package deal! If he can’t or won’t take on the whole furry family, he just may not be worth it for the long-term.

He makes an effort with your friends

For many of us, our boyfriends are not always besties with our besties – and that’s okay. If they are – lucky you! What’s really important here is that your friends have judged your boyfriend’s character positively, and that he’s made an effort to spend time with them – because just like your family, your friends are a part of your life. It’s also important to have independence in long-term relationships, and if your friendships begin to wane then you may end up in a co-dependant relationship, where both of you rely too heavily on each other. No one wants that!

He’s nice to service staff

This is a great way to learn someone’s real character – not just a boyfriend. Everyone will be polite to people whom they judge as equal to them, but a real test of merit is how someone treats people who provide them with service. Does he snap at the cashier, or yell at the waitress? It could be a sign that he’s not as great as he seems. And if he treats everyone equally? Score.

He’s open with communication

Communication is the foundation of any good relationship, especially a marriage. Sure, he definitely shouldn’t be lying to you or keeping secrets. However, open communication can happen on a daily basis, too – he tells you how he’s feeling, what he’s upset about, and knows how to speak about problems in an honest way. If you two have a relationship with good communication, you’re ready for the aisle.

He doesn’t ask for permission, but he runs plans by you

Look, no one wants to be called a ball-and-chain. The nagging wife/girlfriend trope should have been retired a long time ago – but somehow, it persists. However, if your boyfriend wants to make plans (with or without you), he should always keep you in the loop. That does not mean asking permission (ugh), but it does mean keeping your relationship in mind when making plans, and letting you know what he decides. See: open communication. It’s a circle!

He buys your favourite snacks when he goes grocery shopping

The best presents don’t need to cost a ton – and we’ll take a box of double stuff Oreos over roses any day! One of the greatest indicators that he’s long-term material is that he’s thinking about you when he’s not with you. If he brings home things for you without being asked – that’s a great way to know that he could be the one.

He texts you just to tell you he loves you

He does favours for you without being asked

See: buys you double stuff oreos without being asked. One of the languages of love is the language of favours – and taking on responsibility for your well being is an incredible way to make your significant other feel cared for and protected. Whether it’s getting your tires changed or taking your cat to the vet, simple favours often make the biggest impact.

He makes you feel awesome about yourself

Enough said, right? If he makes you question your abilities, talent, or appearance, or lowers your sense of self-worth – why are you even with him? If he boosts your self-esteem, and makes you feel calmer, happier, and like a person with a lot of worth – he’s definitely the one for you.
