A new study suggests women choose partners with beards when they want a long-term relationship.
Everyone has their preferences when it comes to men’s facial hair. Some like lumberjack beards, other like a little bit of stubble where others like it clean shaven. But, according to a new study published in The Journal of Evolutionary Biology, women choose partners with beards when they’re looking for a long-term relationship.
About 8,500 women were shown pictures of men with different types of facial hair. According to Hello Giggles researchers altered different facial features, such as the cheekbones and jawline to make the guy look more masculine or feminine. The participants then rated the attractiveness of the men.
Although, guys with stubble were overall rated as ‘most attractivel’, men with full-beards were ranked as the most attractive when choosing a partner for the long run.
They believe this is because beards suggest men are more masculine and fertile. They wrote: “Our findings suggest that beardedness may be attractive when judging long-term relationships as a signal of intrasexual formidability and the potential to provide direct benefits to females.”
This basically means, a woman’s subconscious kicks and makes her believe bearded guys have the best chance to get her pregnant.
