Kenya’s web speed is in reality quicker than that of the United States! Try not to stress yourself, you are not the only one, we were a little astonished as well. Obviously, the African nation has the 14th quickest mobile internet speed in the WORLD!
This is as indicated by a report by the content delivery network Akamai, which gathers information from more 130 nations. Kenya’s average data connection speed in the first quarter of 2017 was 13.7 megabits per second which is practically twice as fast as the global average.
Kenya ranks above fellow Sub-Saharan African countries in terms of average fixed line internet connection speeds. Part of all this impressive internet growth began in 2013 when Kenya launched its “National Broadband Strategy” to extend fiber optic cables across the country, encourage more local content online, and install ICT centers at universities. According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, broadband penetration now covers as much as 30% of the country,
The United States of America was ranked 28th with an average speed of 10.7 megabits per second. Not only is Kenya’s internet speed impressive, the internet penetration in the country is also one of the highest in Africa. Close to 88% of Kenya’s population access the internet through their phones.
That means that out of an estimated 48,466,928 million people, 31,985,048 Kenyans have access to the internet. With that, Kenya contributes 9.5% of the continent’s total internet usage. This high internet penetration is helped in part by cheaper data plans and the ubiquitous use of mobile money platforms like Mpesa.
Consequently, Kenya’s high mobile penetration and internet speed have also created an enabling environment for gambling. The country is home to the third-largest gambling market in Africa.
Digital Skills Observatory (a research group funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and run by Mozilla), showed earlier this year that smartphone usage in Kenya seems to increase the amount of time people spend gambling.
