Kenya’s sports minister Amina Mohamed on Thursday announced the disbandment of the country’s football federation and the appointment of a caretaker committee amid an alleged corruption scandal engulfing the federation.

The committee, which has a six-month mandate will conduct all the affairs of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in accordance with its constitution, will hold the federation’s elections and hand it over to the newly elected officials.

The 15-member committee will be headed by retired judge Justice Aaron Ringera, who once led the country’s anti-corruption agency.

The ministry said there were several governance issues that have been of “great concern” and accused the FKF of failing to account for all the monies allocated to it by the government.

It further directed three government agencies to carry out more investigations to determine “the extent to which the misappropriation of funds in FKF may have occurred with a view of prosecuting those who may be found culpable”.

With possible sanctions from FIFA looming due to government interference, the ministry defended its actions citing legislation which allows state intervention in certain situations.

“The Sports Act allows the Ministry to intervene in the management of sports organizations where a sports organization fails to adhere to proper corporate governance processes that include financial management,” the ministry said in a statement.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa has previously defended the federation saying it has been accountable and open to be audited by different organizations, including FIFA.
