The Iranian government has temporarily released 54,000 people from prisons to prevent the spread of the coronavirus after the death toll in the country surpassed that of Italy with 92 dead on Wednesday.
Authorities also announced that the total number of infections had increased to 2,922.
Judicial spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili told reporters that 54,000 detainees have been released after being tested negative for Covid-19. The detainees paid bail. “Security prisoners” sentenced to more than five years will not be released.
The ministry is also preparing a national team of 300,000 health workers and specialists, Vice Minister of Health Ali Reza Reisy told the Iranian news agency ILNA.
The coronavirus from the Chinese city of Wuhan has now spread to all continents except Antarctica, killing more than 3,000 people and infecting more than 90,000 worldwide.
