IRAN unveiled today its latest improved missile defense system, which boasts of being able to detect missiles and enemy drones more than 250 kilometers away.
“This system has high capabilities and can detect all types of ballistic missiles and cruises and drones,” said Brigadier General Alireza Sabahifard, commander of the Iranian Air Defense Unit.
This announcement comes at a time of increasing tension between the Islamic Republic and the United States.
In June, Iran shot down a Global Hawk UAV with a surface-to-air missile for allegedly violating its airspace, which the United States denies.
And earlier this week, Hassan Rouhani warned that any conflict with Iran would lead to “the mother of all wars”.
The Iranian president issued the warning in a speech broadcast live on public television, saying once again that transport may not be secure in the Strait of Hormuz.
His warning comes as British ships join the US Navy in the Gulf following the seizure of two ships.
Iran has also unveiled three new precision-guided missiles. Brigadier-General Amir Hatami, defense minister, said his country “will not hesitate to defend itself”.
