As the world continues its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, one item that has become a necessity is the face mask.

Protective masks are at the forefront in helping people avoid contracting the disease.

Most governments around the world have mandated the wearing of face masks in a bid to curb further spread of COVID-19.

In India, a man had grabbed headlined for a unique face mask, which he hopes will keep the disease away.

Businessman Shankar Kurhade from the western city of Pune purchased a $4,000 gold mask.

Kurhade is confident that the mask, alongside other protective measures, can help keep him safe from the diease.

“It is a thin mask and has tiny pores that is helping me to breathe,” AFP quotes Shankar.

“I am not sure if it will be effective to protect me from a coronavirus infection but I am taking other precautions,” he added.

The gold mask also fits well with his jewelery, which he likes to adorn whenever he goes out.

Kurhade is fond of gold necklaces, bracelets and rings.

His recent addition of the gold face mask has made him a popular sight in his neighborhood.

“People are asking me for selfies,” he said.

“They are awestruck when they see me wearing the gold mask in markets.”

India has reported 648,315 COVID-19 infections and 18,655 deaths, according to data from the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.
