Home Remedies For Bad Breath That Work

Bad breath, although nothing serious, is certainly something that can ruin your self-esteem. Indeed, halitosis can have such a debilitating effect on our confidence that we stay indoors, putting off meetings and seeing friends. Worse still, bad breath can have a terribly negative effect on our relationships; in short, it can put our whole life under terrible strain. It’s something we think about all the time.

As embarrassing as it can be, bad breath really shouldn’t have such a crippling effect on us. But because it does, remedies are sought. Sometimes, rooting out the underlying problem, such as smoking or gum disease, can be enough to eliminate it. Often, though, bad breath is simply caused by the natural bacteria that builds up over time in your mouth, particularly at the back of your tongue. As such, eliminating it can be tough. The good news, though, is that there are at least 10 awesome home remedies for bad breath that actually work. Let’s take a look at them.

Cinnamon

The great thing about cinnamon is that it’s inexpensive and super versatile; you can drop it into your cup of tea or hot chocolate, or you can add it to a wide variety of culinary dishes to give them added flavour.

Because cinnamon is super healthy and super tasty, cinnamon is also one of our very favourite home remedies for bad breath. It’s largely down to its cinnamic aldehyde content that cinnamon can cover up halitosis, while at the same time reducing your mouths’ overall bacterial content.

An effective cinnamon remedy includes boiling a teaspoon of it in water with bay leaves. Then, strain the solution before rinsing it in your mouth in the same way you would mouthwash.

Parsley

Another one of great home remedies for bad breath is parsley.

Using parsley to treat bad breath is a tricky one thanks to this vegetable’s strong and divisive taste. Some folk love adding it to dishes, while others absolutely detest it. So whether you use parsley to cure your halitosis really does come down to whether you like it or not!

If you do happen to like this leafy vegetable, all you need to do is a chew on a sprig in the same way that you chew on gum. For added taste, you could dip it in vinegar before chewing. Alternatively, you could dump the parsley in a juicer and sip it as a juice. Either way, it will refresh your breath.

Water

Water is the most natural substance on the planet, so it makes sense that it is good at flushing out bacteria from our mouths. Water hydrates your mouth, which makes it ideal for keeping bad breath out. If you want to start the day without a bout of bad breath, drink water before bed.

Herbs

Herbs are very powerful things, and they can work wonders as home remedies for bad breath. It’s the various toxins in our body that can disrupt our natural internal harmony, creating health problems, such as bad breath. To improve your situation, flushing out these pesky toxins is key, and one way to do this is by consuming more herbs, such as basil leaves and mint. Introduce them to your diet and your teas and you’ll be onto a winner.

Lemon Juice

One of good home remedies for bad breath us lemon juice; it comes with a whole range of health benefits, including flushing out the pesky toxins that build up in our body while we sleep.

Lemon juice is also a fantastic home remedy for bad breath, and has indeed been used for generations in this capacity. It’s largely down to the high acidic content of lemons that lemon juice can halt the growth of nasty bacteria in your mouth. Not just that, but lemon juice also has an ace secret weapon up its juicy sleeve: Its strong smell supersedes the smell of bad breath!

All you need to do is stir a single tbsp of lemon juice into your morning cup of water before rinsing it around your mouth. Job done!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Not everyone likes the taste of vinegar, so just like parsley this one is going to be a hit with some and a miss with others. If you enjoy the taste of apple cider vinegar, you’ll be pleased to learn that its pH balancing effects ensure that it’s a fantastic cure for halitosis.

All you need to do is stir a single tbsp of raw apple cider vinegar into a cup of water before drinking it. This needs to be done before you eat a meal. As well as curing bad breath, apple cider vinegar can also help with digestion.

Tea

Probably you didn’t expect to see tea in our list of home remedies for bad breath. If you’re a coffee lover, you might be interested to know that tea is the warm drink that can combat bad breath better than any others. And it doesn’t matter whether you drink regular teas or specialist, herbal teas; they’re all as potent as each other!

It’s the antioxidant polyphenols found in tea that limit or even totally halt the growth of bacteria in our mouths, thereby cuing bad breath.

If you want to combat bad breath with homemade sage tea, all you need to is steep a single tsp of dried sage in a cup of warm water for around ten minutes. Then, strain it and drink at least three times a day for better, fresher breath.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil may be the best oil that you’ve ever heard of until now, especially if you have bad breath. Tea tree oil is known to reduce bacteria in your mouth, and is included in some toothpastes.

A Better Diet

It may sound obvious, but the best way to beat bad breath is to improve your diet. Junk food is a major contributor to halitosis. Swapping the bad stuff for a proper diet based around leafy greens, fruit and complete proteins can help to improve your situation markedly.

Eliminate Poor Habits

As well as improving your diet, another simple way to cure bad breath is to eliminate any bad habits that you suspect are causing bad breath. These can include smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and not cleaning your dentures regularly. Frequent trips to the dentist (at least twice a year) are also recommended.
