Grace Mugabe, the wife of Zimbabwe’s 91-year-old president, Robert Mugabe, has said that God wants her husband to stay on as president of the country as he is unimpressed by his would-be successors.
Speaking at a function in Binga, Matabeleland north province, the controversial first lady asked the crowd to ponder on why her husband continued to be strong despite his age. “Just ask yourself why God continues giving a 91-year-old strength to lead the country. Where have you ever seen a 91-year-old who can stand for two hours?” she said.
Mugabe, who became president of Zimbabwe in 1980 following the nation’s independence, has already been endorsed by his ZANU-PF party to be its candidate once again in 2018, by which time he will be 94 years old.
The 50-year-old Grace Mugabe advised those eager to succeed her husband to “play safe”, not forgetting the fate which befell his former vice president Joice Mujuru, who was ousted last year following allegations of corruption and plotting to overthrow Mugabe.
“This is what destroyed Mujuru. Do not be caught off-side,” Grace said.
The profile of the first lady has continued to rise since she emerged as the leader of the women’s wing of the ruling party last year.
