Google will open a three-month summer training course at Googleplex, its headquarters in Mountain View, California. A program open exclusively to African American computer students at Howard University, Washington.
In the United States, it is called the “Black Harvard”. The Howard University in Washington State has seen novelist Toni Morrison, journalist Ta – Nehisi Coates, and Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh.
Founded in 1867, it is part of the HBCU , the historically black colleges and universities , which are traditionally black-majority institutions known for their involvement with minorities. Today, the university has more than 10,000 students and it partners with the Google giant around a common goal: to encourage the recruitment of African American students within the firm of Mountain View.
Bonita Stewart, vice president of international partnerships for Google, announced on Thursday (April 23rd) the launch of “Howard West”, a computer training program between the company and the university.
Three months at Googleplex
“Howard is my alma mater , so I’m excited to announce that our recruitment that was already targeting this university is now expanding to accommodate a campus installed at Googleplex for black students,” said Bonita Stewart in a statement posted on the blog Of Google.

In concrete terms, the program plans to recruit between 25 and 30 students for a three-month summer internship on the West Coast in Silicon Valley. Computer courses will be given by Google engineers and university professors. A scholarship will be paid to students for housing and daily expenses on campus.
Only students already enrolled in a computer program can apply. At Howard, the announcement creates excitement: “There is no historically Afro-American university on the West Coast. Embedding a group of black students in computer science to train them is a great experience,” said CNN Alanna Walton, a student in computer science at Howard University. After this first experiment, Google plans to expand this program to other universities predominantly composed of African-Americans.
Efforts for greater diversity
Among these trained students, the Mountain View firm is looking to recruit future executives and employees from the African American community. By 2015, Google had invested $ 150 million in a policy to increase diversity in the company. Since last June, the company hosts in its offices in New York the association Black Girls Code which teaches programming to black girls. In October, Google inaugurated ” Code Next, ” its first code lab in Oakland, offering free code courses for Blacks and Hispanic Americans.
But at Google, as with other major groups in Silicon Valley, the homogeneity of profiles – mostly white men – remains controversial. Like several tech companies, Google publishes annual reports on the subject. The most recent estimate was 2% for Blacks in the company and 3% for Hispanics.
