Ghana’s Electoral Commission Website Hacked

Hackers targeteded Ghana’s electoral commission website as vote counting continued in the tightly contested elections.

According to a notice posted on its twitter account ,the body confirmed the website had indeed been targeted and results indicated showed that oppostion candidate Nana Akufo- Addo was leading the polls.

However, the commission sought to clarify that the results were fake and urged the public to disregard them.

The services were however restored after 4 hours.

Meanwhile, preliminary results indicate that the gap between incumbent president John Mahama who is seeking re-election and opposition front runner Akufo-Addo is very narrow.

According to Reuters, the main opposition party has called on the president to concede defeat though the electoral body is yet to officially announce the results.

The New Patriotic Party said its candidate had a won 52% of the vote according to its own tally against 44.8 percent for president Mahama.

The commission’s spokes person said that the agency would start releasing results on Thursday and urged Ghanaians to remain calm.
