The gang-rape victim, Ausi Phindile who had five surgeries around her abdomen after the incident, stripped naked to show President Rhamaphosa, her scars and also raise the alarm that women are abused, raped and murdered daily.
It was further gathered that during the event, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will launch a national strategic plan to tackle gender-based violence (GBV), after years of lobbying by activists.
Ramaphosa was speaking at the Presidential GBV Summit Thursday, the latest in a string of meetings convened by Ramaphosa on significant issues facing the country such as health and unemployment.
“Our society is too tolerant of violence against women, often putting pressure on women to withdraw charges against the perpetrators,” he saidLoading...
“We must raise boys and girls with the knowledge and understanding that no person has the right to treat them as inferior or to harm them in any way and that boys and girls are equal in all respects.”
Ramaphosa also said that the government would consider establishing a national registry of protection orders to improve enforcement.
