The Gambian newspaper Observer fell under the tax burden. Gambia Revenue Authorization (GRA) agents with two policemen disembarked yesterday in the newspaper’s premises to order the closure of the press group. Staff were invited to leave the premises to order the closure of the press group.
The new Gambian authorities accuse the press group belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh of having accumulated 22 years without his taxes. The paper did not pay its taxes during this period. Some see behind this closure of the journal Observer a settlement of political accounts.
