Former Gatekeeper Becomes Medical Student At Hospital He Worked At

Former watchman becomes medical student at hospital he worked at

Russell Ledet, a medical student in the US, had no idea that fate would land him at the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hardworking doctor who labours night and day to save lives was once a watchman at the hospital he works in.

For five years, Russell manned the gates at Baton Rouge General Medical Center while studying medicine on the side. Often, the father of two carried around note cards and studied them while undertaking his duties and pestered resident doctors at the facility with questions. Most of the medics brushed him off numerously claiming they did not have time to tutor him but the facility’s chief surgery resident Patrick Greiffenstein believed in Russell.

President Barack Obama said, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." I bring that up because nearly one week ago, I reluctantly gave a heartfelt call to the @tulanemed and @lsuhsc_nola_nsslha community. I say reluctantly because to be candid all I wanted to do was be at home with my kids. This wasn't my first protest, and it won't be my last. I was and am also tired of talking about what I have had to talk and think about all my life. • • • For some, this is a new awakening, and it's cool. It's something energizing and fun to do. Frankly, for some of us, this is an "I been telling you this" type of moment. I chose to go to that protest, be present, and engage because I know no one is coming to save us. We gotta do it ourselves. I chose to do it because there were children, the ones standing behind, counting on me to show up and DO SOMETHING no matter how I felt. I chose to come because I knew the work my dear classmate and sister @manu_9485 had thoughtfully put into making that protest a thing. I did it because somethings are simply bigger than how I feel. We, the city of New Orleans, have a golden opportunity to illustrate that we understand the massiveness of the moment we are in. We have an opportunity to beacon for change. It's up to us as to whether or not we will step up to the plate and make that change. I'm willing to work for change, and I know a host of students, residents, faculty, and staff, as well as administrators at @tulanemed are willing to put our hands to work for change. According to Good Morning America, Russell has a PhD in molecular oncology and served in the army for a while before embarking on his new path. “This is one of those reflective points when you are trying to understand how far you have come and how far you got to go,” the brainy man said. The 34-year-old who returned to Baton Rouge said he takes his time to mentor young visionaries whose dreams are as big as he did.

It’s FAMILY FRIYAYYYYYY. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. NO COOKING AND NO LIMITS (Except the COVID-19 mandated ones😂) • • • One way we are handling this forced time at home is by writing creatively MORE. That means more imagination, more art, more construction paper, more washable markers (because Mahlina will cause havoc with non-washable ones😂), and more PAINT. We are also reading more. Moja tells me that because she’s reading more (on average 2-3 hrs a day), her stories are a bit more colorful and the names of characters in her stories are a bit more OUT THERE. Nevertheless, creativity is an option for kiddos during this time. Let’s keep on being amazing parents for the minions. • • • @blackparentmagazine @blkfathersrock @blackfatherrevolution @blacklivingknowledge @blacklove @blackfatherswearehere @fatherhood_fraternity @fathers_leading_families #blackfamily #blacklove #melanin #blackisbeautiful #blackwomen #blackgirlmagic #blackexcellence #blackfathers #blackpower #melaninpoppin #blackunity #blackhistory #blackbusiness #blackpeople #blackfamilies #blackmen #blackwoman #blackman #black #blacklivesmatter #blackmothers #blackgirls #blackfamilylove #blackqueen #love #blackfamilygoals #family #girldad❤️
