Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont Arrested by German Police

Carles Puigdemont was arrested by the German police, according to his lawyer. He was crossing the Danish border in order to travel to Belgium, according to his lawyer.

The lawyer Carles Puigdemont, former president of the generality of Catalonia who had conducted a broad secessionist campaign in autumn 2017 , was arrested on March 25 by the German police on the Danish border. His lawyer announced the arrest of the Catalan politician on Twitter.

The lawyer stated that the arrest took place in a “correct” manner. However, he did not specify where the former Catalan leader was detained. However, he said that his client left Finland on March 23 and intended to travel across Germany to Belgium. He fled to Brussels during the events of autumn 2017.


Carles Puigdemont faces up to 25 years in prison in Spain, where he is being prosecuted for “rebellion” and “sedition”. The former 55-year-old journalist, elected president of Catalonia in January 2016, was dismissed by Madrid on October 27 , a few hours after a declaration of independence passed in the regional parliament. Since then, Catalonia remains under the tutelage of the Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy, which had suspended its regional autonomy.
