Egyptian Billionaire Naguib Sawiris, Offers To Buy Island To Host Migrants And Provide Jobs For Them

Egyptian billionaire, Naguib Sawiris, has offered the governments of Italy and Greece to sell him an island in the Mediterranean Sea where he would host migrants from Syria and other countries

Greece or Italy sell me an island, ill call its independence and host the migrants and provide jobs for them building their new country

It’s not something you hear or even read about very often. Naguib Sawiris, the 61 year-old Egyptian tycoon and “freedom fighter” however, seems quite serious about his offer.

On Tuesday Sawiris asked on his Twitter account for Greece and Italy to let him to buy one of their islands.

“No sane person with integrity would look at the news and decide not to take action,” he said in a TV interview on the CBC channel.

According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), over 300,000 people have made the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe this year. More than 2,600 of those perished, including 3 year-old Alyan whose photo has captured the world’s attention.

The tweet soon went viral where many, understandably, questioned his seriousness, but he stood his ground.
