The archeological unit and the police at Safaga International Maritime Port at the Red Sea foiled on Wednesday an attempt to smuggle 16 ancient artifacts abroad, said the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in a statement.
The ancient pieces included wooden and bronze statues, manuscripts, colorful funeral masks, and amulets covered with gold, said the statement.
Attempts of smuggling ancient coins are repeated in Egypt. On June 30, the archeological unit and the police at Egypt’s Cairo International Airport seized 203 ancient coins.
