Durban Beaches Remain Closed Following Deadly Storm

All beaches in south Durban remain closed following the devastating storm earlier this week, as authorities call on the public to refrain from swimming in those beaches.

The region’s beaches were badly affected by the storm which is reported to have killed several people. No specific number has however been reported yet.

A clean up exercise was commissioned on Friday to clear the beaches of the destructive effects of the storm.

Following that storm, five hospitals in the area were badly affected, also halting operations in the city’s harbor for the better part of Thursday. This, after a coastal container vessel ran aground near the harbour entrance.

“Clean-ups are ongoing at central beaches. Due to the constantly changing weather, not all the beaches in the area will be open for bathing. Lifeguards are on duty and will guide residents and visitors to the correct swimming areas,” eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said.
