Democracy means no freedom of speech; Police Arrest Man for Insulting President Lungu on Facebook

Police in Lusaka have arrested a 29 year old man of Msolo Primary School in Samfya in connection with the defamatory statements against President Edgar Lungu.

The suspect identified as Dickson Banda who allegedly posted a defamatory statement against the president on Facebook has also been charged for being in possession of pornographic material.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed this in a statement.


Katongo narrated that the suspect alleged created four different Facebook accounts using different names on which he was posting derogatory statements against President Lungu.

“He was apprehended from Luanshya after Police launched investigations and has been charged with: Defamation of the President contrary to section 69 of the Penal code Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia; and Prohibition of Pornography contrary to Section 102 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act No. 21 of 2009,” Katongo said.

She said the suspect will appear in court today.
