The family and Kofi Annan’s foundation provided additional information about his last moments. The former Secretary-General of the United Nations fell ill during a trip to South Africa and was transported to Switzerland for treatment.
The widow of the late diplomat, Nane Maria, told Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, that her husband died peacefully in his sleep.
The Kofi Annan Foundation confirmed this information in a statement posted on Facebook, adding that the children of the island, Ama, Kojo and Nina, were with him during his last moments.
“It is with great sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce the death of Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, on Saturday, August 18th after a short illness. “
The foundation calls for respect for the privacy of Kofi Annan’s family as she cries and prepares for her funeral.
The death of the former UN Secretary-General has plunged Ghanaians into sadness. President Akufo-Addo said he was deeply saddened by his death and offered his condolences to the family of the late diplomat.
