David Njuguna: Kenyan Man Jailed Over Death of US Police Officer

A Kenyan-born driver was on Thursday sentenced over the death of a Massachusetts State Police Trooper.

David Njuguna was convicted of manslaughter and motor vehicle homicide for the March 2016 incident in the US. Judge Janet Kenton- Walker sentenced Njuguna to 5-7 years in prison.

Speaking after the sentencing, Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said that Njuguna should have gotten a harsher sentence.

“When the prosecution was looking for 10 years, which in my opinion was more than reasonable; to cut that sentence in half essentially I think it just doesn’t go far enough,” he said.

According to the charge sheet, Njuguna’s car slammed into the back of Clardy’s parked police cruiser.

Prosecutors said that Njuguna was speeding at 80mph and was high on Marijuana at the time of the crash.

The sentence on Thursday comes after Clardy’s family members gave emotional victim impact statements.

“On March 16, 2016, I kissed my husband goodbye, told him I loved him and watched him back out of the driveway not knowing it would be the last time I would see him,” Clardy’s wife Reisa told the court.

“An hour later, because of a selfish and senseless act, his life was cut short,” she continued emotionally. “The life of a wonderful man who had so much more life to live was taken abruptly.”

“That day I was told my husband was killed was the day my life stood still.”

“I can’t bring you comfort. I can’t bring you peace. I can’t take the day away. I can’t make it right,” the judge told the family.

Ngujuna, whose head was bowed the entire time did not say anything. However, the defence attorney offered sincere condolences to the Clardy Family and Troopers on behalf of his client.
