When we cough, many of us look for syrup to relieve the pain.
But it turns out that you’d better eat a bar of milk chocolate, as a doctor explains. For the latter, chocolate is the best cure for coughs and respiratory problems than conventional medicines.
According to Professor Alyn Morice, Head of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Studies at the University of Hull and founding member of the International Society for the Study of Cough, “chocolate can calm coughs”.
Writing for MailOnline, Alyn, who has spent years researching coughs, said the researchers had just seen the results of a recent study of over-the-counter medications.
“This proves that a new drug containing cocoa is better than a standard linctus.”
A medicine containing chocolate could be the solution, according to Professor Alyn Morice.
The 163-person study found that patients taking chocolate-based medications experienced significant improvements in two days.
Nevertheless, this is not the first study that suggests that chocolate can calm coughs.
Researchers at Imperial College London found that theobromine, a cocoa alkaloid, was more effective at treating cough than codeine – an ingredient often used in cough medicines.
So, how can chocolate really help fight coughs?
According to Professor Alyn Morice, this is the “softening properties” of chocolate – in other words, it means that it forms a coating on the nerve endings of the throat, thus eliminating the urge to cough.
“This emollient effect explains why honey, lemon and other sweet syrups can help, but I think chocolate has something more,” adds Alyn.
The expert thinks that chewing a piece of chocolate could bring some relief, but it is best to work with other ingredients of the drug.Publicity
