Canada Edge Cameroon in Women’s World Cup Group E Opener

Cameroon lost to Canada 1-0 in their opening Group E game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier, France.

Defender Kadeisha Buchanan, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais Féminin at club level, scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of halftime.

Canada dominated the game with 65% possession but could not add to their tally registering only four out of 16 shots on target. Cameroon goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom also pulled off some crucial saves.

Despite Canada’s dominance, Cameroon did enough to keep the score down and occasionally cause unease to the Canadians when going forward.

Following their loss, Cameroon sits in third place in Group E and is fifth in the third-place team standings, which consists of six countries.

Cameroon’s loss means no African team won their opening group game at this year’s edition following defeats to South Africa and Nigeria.

Cameroon next plays Netherlands at the Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes on Saturday while Canada take on New Zealand at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble on the same day.
