While Etienne Eto’o, son of the legendary Cameroonian footballer Samuel Eto’o, had spent two intense weeks of preparation with the Cubs in preparation for the Brazilian World Cup to be held from October 26 to November 17, 2019, the young member of the club of Mallorca was not selected among the 21 Cameroonian players for the U-17 World.
The reason put forward by the coach Thomas Libiih, is that the young Etienne was not trained in Cameroon. For this purpose, a decree of the Head of State prohibits to select any young U-17 player who has not been trained in Cameroon.
The young Eto’o’s dream of participating in this final phase of the U-17 World Cup was therefore broken. Interviewed by our colleagues from Lebledparle , he was kind enough to react on this subject:
” This month was to be one of the most beautiful days of my life thanks to the unique opportunity I had to compete in a World Cup. This dream, that of all the young players, was presented earlier than expected. Many of you think that coming here (in Brazil, ed) has been easy but you are wrong. In reality, it was complicated between the flurry of medical tests, the express trips to obtain my Cameroonian passport, the negotiations to obtain the authorization to renew my Spanish passport in order to enter Brazil, the specific training, the fear of hurt me and play. I was in a lot of stress to be ready to play this World Cup. On the last day, my journey to a new stage of my life seemed to be taking shape. I flew from Majorca to Paris then Brazil. I met new teammates who traveled with the same enthusiasm. We arrived at our destination. We started to train and soon after, we played the first friendly game where I had the opportunity to score a goal as soon as I came in. I felt good. I was convinced that this opportunity could be very important in my life after 13 years of football. But what we did not know, my 5 European teammates and myself, is that because of a presidential decree (which I respect but I prefer not to comment), we would not play the World Cup . I’ll admit that it was very hard but thanks to the support we gave each other, we managed to start turning the page. I want to thank my mom for all she did for me and all the support she gave me, my family in general, my friends and all the people who took a few minutes to send me messages of support. It is an honor for me to have represented Cameroon throughout these two weeks. I want to say a big thank you to the Federation for convening me and the technical staff “, It is an honor for me to have represented Cameroon throughout these two weeks.
