CAF Approves Use Of VAR Technology At CHAN 2018

A referee reviews an incident using the VAR technology in a past match.

It’s use will however be only commence from the quarter final stage of the tournament scheduled for January 13 to February 4.

African referees shortlisted for the FIFA World Cup 2018 to be played in Russia with previous training on the use of VAR will be called upon to officiate the tournament.

Morocco was awarded the rights to host the tournament designed for locally based players after Kenya failed to meet CAF’s requirements to stage it.

Kenya had been scheduled to host the continental showpiece but had its rights withdrawn after an assessment by CAF officials revealed that its preparations were way behind schedule.

Following that decision, Morocco, Ethiopia and Equatorial Guinea bid to host the tournament, with the North African country being successful in its bid.

The VAR technology has already been put into practice, having been used at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

The system will also be used at the FIFA 2018 World Cup.
