‘Cabinet Reshuffle’: President Barrow Sacks All ‘Jammeh-Appointed’ Governors; Reinstates ‘Fired’ Ambassadors!!

As expected by many, Gambia’s cabinet reshuffle has officially kicked off. Reaching a successful end to the political impasse, President Barrow on his return said fixing up his cabinet was a top priority.

President Adama Barrow has fired all regional governors that were appointed by Yahya Jammeh and appointed back into offices, 12 Gambian ambassadors who were recalled by Jammeh during the brief power tussle.

No reason per say have been given for the sack of the regional governors but their services were terminated “with immediate effect”. Their replacements have not been announced yet.

The governors involved include:

  1. Lamin Queen  Jammeh NBR
  2. Aminata Sifai Hydara West Coast,
  3. Salifu Hydara LRR,
  4. Omar Ceesay URR,
  5. Salifu Puye, LRR,
  6. Omar  Khan CRR.

Last month former Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh fired 12 ambassadors after they requested him to comply with the rule of law and allow Barrow take power as deserved.

Gambia’s Ambassador to the U.S, Sheikh Omar Faye, who announced his recall on social media has been reinstated back to his office by President Barrow.

Other reinstated ambassadors include:

  1. Dembo M. Badgie – China
  2. Momodou Badgie – Turkey
  3. Mrs. Elizabeth Ya Eli Harding -Britain
  4. Dr. Mamadou Tangara -United Nations (New York)
  5. Momodou Aki Bayo- Russia
  6. Mrs. Teneng Mba Jaiteh- Belgium
  7. Momodou Pa Njie- Senegal
  8. Lang Yarboe- Spain
  9. Abdou Jarju- Guinea
  10. Mass Axi Gai- Ethiopia

Report also says that Masanneh Kinteh, a former military chief, has been appointed as a national security advisor to the president.

A foreign ministry source suggested that the sack of these ambassadors was because they opposed Jammeh’s wish to overturn December 1 vote result.

“I do not know why President Yahya Jammeh terminated their services, but I can tell you that these are the ambassadors that congratulated and endorsed President-elect Adama Barrow for his election victory,”

The sack of regional governors is undoubtedly part of the top expectation of most Gambians.

In an open letter written to President barrow yesterday, 2nd February 2017, Saul Jeng emphasized that Gambians want Barrow to “launch the bringing to book [of] Jammeh and his cronies”.

Excerpts from the open letter titled Justice Delayed Is Justice Deniedreads thus

“Your Excellency, it is not outlandish to assert you have taken over from a government which for 22 years has not only disdainfully repressed but orchestrated gruesome killings, tortures, maims, banishment, disappearances, unlawful arrests and incarcerating its vulnerable citizens.

Jeng called on the president to probe into the disappearance and eventual death of Lieutenant Ebou Lowe.

Lt  Lowe was a former member of the Gambia Armed Forces. In 2006, he and 30 others were arrested for partaking in a coup plot to oust Jammeh.

He was supposedly detained in Mile Two Central Prison. A family member says he was denied access to him anytime he visited.

On the release of others, he was not found in the said prison and was later revealed to be dead. Till date, no clear explanation has been given to the death of the former military man.

While giving Lt Lowe’s case as one of many reasons why it is pertinent and necessary that Jammeh and his dictatorial cohorts are served justice, Jeng also points out the eventual need for healing and reconciliation of the Gambian people.

“Consequently, Mr President, before instituting a commission of peace and reconciliation, please let anyone who allegedly aided and abetted, orchestrated, ordered and/or in any means partook in the torture, killing and unlawful arrest of any Gambian be arrested, his or her travel documents seized pending their investigation and subsequent prosecution.”
