Boxer Fatuma Zarika Becomes First Kenyan To Win WBC World Title

Kenya’s Fatuma Zarika has made history by defeating Jamaican defending champion Alicia Ashley to become the first Kenyan female professional boxer to hold a World Boxing Council (WBC) title. Zarika won the WBC super bantamweight title on points. We celebrate Zarika’s remarkable accomplishment.

Kenyan boxer Fatuma Zarika is the new female World Boxing Council (WBC)  super bantamweight champion after defeating veteran Jamaican boxer and defending champion Alicia Ashley to become the first Kenyan female professional boxer to hold a WBC title.

Zarika won the prestigious WBC super bantamweight title on points.

The Kenyan challenger came all guns blazing, out-boxed and out-foxed the vintage Jamaican boxer to claim the title in Flint, Michigan, USA.

According to WBC, with that remarkable victory on points, the 31 year-old Zarika, improved her record to 28 wins, two draws and 12 losses. Ashley, 49, the oldest all-time world champion now has 23 wins, a draw and 11 losses.


The new champion has received numerous congratulatory messages on social media.Born in 1985, the Kenyan star endured a difficult upbringing, losing her mother and living in one of the toughest neighbourhoods of Nairobi, but that didn’t deter her from chasing her dreams.Zarika started boxing as an amateur at 15, and quickly rose to become one of Kenya’s most promising boxers. Her impressive boxing record is testament to her talent and great determination and her remarkable achievement can only inspire aspiring young boxers to dare to dream.

African female boxers are flexing their muscle on the world stage and proving that they have the mettle to compete and win on the biggest stage. In January, Zambia’s Catherine Phiri made history by winning the WBC bantamweight title when she defeated Mexican Yazmin Rivas in the sixth round.
