The Argentine legend, 58, discovered the problem during a routine check-up and was forced to undergo an operation.
The surgery stemmed bleeding caused by a hernia and Maradona’s agent confirmed he was recovering in hospital.
“Diego Maradona’s surgical procedure is over,” his lawyer Matias Morla said on Twitter. “Thank God everything went perfectly.
“Now we wait for the recovery so Diego can return to work as soon as possible
The former Napoli star is now coach of second division Mexican side Dorados de Sinaloa and discovered the bleeding shortly before he was due to fly out to his club.
He has had to use crutches on the touchline in recent months due to ongoing problems with his knees.
Maradona plans to return to manage the club for a second season when his recovery is complete.
Maradona’s health has been cause for concern for some time and he fainted at the World Cup last summer during Argentina’s win over Nigeria.
He was also taken into hospital in 2004 with heart and respiratory problems that were later linked to cocaine use.
