OneofGhana’s foremost playwrights, Professor Ama Ata Aidoo shocked the organisers of an event which was meant to honour her on Saturday when she walked out of the programme because her name was spelt wrongly on the brochure and banner.
The celebrated writer abandoned the event organised by the University of Ghana’s Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) because her middle name Ata was spelt with an extra ‘T’(Atta).
“My mother walked out of a CEGENSA event today [Saturday] meant to celebrate her and the winners of a short story competition in her honour,” her daughter, Kinna Likimani posted on social media.

She further explained that her mother had to leave the programme because both the banner and the brochure cover had her mother’s name spelt as “Ama Atta Aidoo” and not “Ama Ata Aidoo”.
“The whole thing is messy. We must really pay more attention to the details of things. It’s more disheartening because CEGENSA is an academic institute. They know her, her name and her work.”
CEGENSA as part of its 10th anniversary celebration organized a short story competition in honour of Prof. Aidoo for her multiple roles as a pan-African feminist, an author, poet and playwright.
