Schwarzenegger is a commonly recognized name. He is most famous for his Hollywood vocation as an action movie star. In time his break in the political world made him all the more well known.

1. Had A Troubled Childhood

Arnold who is currently the only surviving member of his family was raised in a strict Roman Catholic family. He was born on 30 July 1947.

“Back then in Austria it was a very different world … if we did something bad or we disobeyed our parents, the rod was not spared.”

Till date he has his reservations to the German-Austrian pattern of child upbringing, where he says the system was not concerned about raising an individual but training by compulsion.

His parents, Gustav Schwarzenegger and Aurelia Jadrny were both local police chiefs. Arnold was the second of 2 children. His brother whom he recalls was favored over him by his father died in a car crash.

Arnold attended Santa Monica College and obtained his BA from the University of Wisconsin. He also spent time with the Austrian Armed Forces. He joined the military in 1965 as it was mandatory to serve for a year for all under 18 males in Austria.

2. Became A US Citizen In 1983

Schwarzenegger moved to the United States in 1968 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen on September 17, 1983.

3. Award Winning Bodybuilder/Athlete

A the age of 20, he became Mr Universe, making him the youngest Mr. Universe in the history of bodybuilding.

“I actually started weight training when I was 15, but I’d been participating in sports, like soccer, for years, so I felt that although I was slim, I was well-developed, at least enough so that I could start going to the gym and start Olympic lifting.”

Success-driven Arnold went on to win the Mr. Universe titles four more times and also became a 7-time Mr. Olympia winner before his retirement from bodybuilding.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of bodybuilding’s biggest icon. In 1965, he admitted he took steroids during his body building days. He has written many books and articles on the sport.

4. Successful Acting Career

Although his body size and accent were a bit of an initial scare, the star made the very best in the acting world.

 “It was very difficult for me in the beginning – I was told by agents and casting people that my body was ‘too weird’, that I had a funny accent, and that my name was too long. You name it, and they told me I had to change it. Basically, everywhere I turned, I was told that I had no chance.”

He is very famous for his role in James Cameron’s science fiction blockbuster, The Terminator. Other successful action movies include Commando (1985), Raw Deal (1986), The Running Man (1987), Predator (1987), and Red Heat (1988).  Terminator 2: Judgment Day was the highest-grossing film of 1991.


Back in the 80’s Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were international hot cakes.

In 1993, the National Association of Theatre Owners named him the “International Star of the Decade”.

After his hand over as Governor, Arnold hinted he was working on some movie scripts already.

5. Californian Governor (2003-2011)

Arnold’s father was a police man and a member of the Nazi family. Thus he grew up in a family with strong political views. In the same way Arnolds’ political interest gradually began to unfold even as an actor in Hollywood.

His political views were reportedly the opposite of the popular Hollywood liberal and Democratic perspectives. It was no surprise when he registered as a Republican politician.

From 1990-1993 he served as chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

In 2003, he became the Californian Governor and served for 2 tenures. He was the 38th governor of California.

While in office he was dedicated to global warming solutions.

6. Business

Based on the tax returns filed in 2006, Schwarzenegger’s net worth was estimated to the sum of $800 million.

Arnold Schwarzenegger became a millionaire even before he started acting in Hollywood. Together with his fellow bodybuilder Franco Columbu, Schwarzenegger started a bricklaying business in 1968.

From there he ventured into series of businesses and investments which paid off well.

Arnold invested in a number of real estate holding companies. In 1992, Schwarzenegger and his wife opened a restaurant in Santa Monica called Schatzi On Main. However, he sold the restaurant 6 years after.

7. Family Life

Arnold Schwarzenegger got married to his ex-wife, Maria Shriver in 1986.

Shriver is the niece of President John F. Kennedy. The couple announced their separation and later finalized the divorce in 2017.

In 2011 Schwarzenegger confirmed he fathered a child outside of marriage with his family’s housekeeper, Mildred Baena. Altogether he has 7 children.
