Arab League Spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said at instructions from Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abu el-Gheit, the understanding agreement between the Arab League and Guatemala has been cancelled and that Guatemala has been informed of this and that there will be no further cooperation between them due to its position from Jerusalem, WAFA reported.
According to En.farsnews.com, he added that this decision was made in accordance with the resolution of the recent extraordinary Arab League meeting at the level of Foreign Ministers, which condemned Guatemala for moving its embassy to Jerusalem and vowed to take proper political and economic sanctions against it.
The Spokesperson stressed that moving the embassy was a clear violation of international consensus on the legal and historical status of Jerusalem as an occupied city and a violation of international law and United Nations resolutions on the city.
Guatemala has followed the United States’ lead and moved its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, thereby officially recognizing the city as the nation’s capital, two days after Washington inaugurated its new site there, a move that infuriated Palestinians and drew international condemnation.
On the day the United States opened its new embassy, Israeli troops killed at least 65 Palestinians at the border in Gaza.
