The country recently became infamous for a string of extra-violent rape cases to which very little or nothing at all has been done to the perpetrators. The most recent occurrence, however, has sent many off the edge.
A 15-year-old girl was kidnapped off the streets of Agra and raped by three men on Saturday, August 27, 2016.
The rape which lasted a gruesome 3 hours was reported to have taking place as the men were driving around in the van used for the kidnapping.
Speaking to the issue on Sunday, 28 August, Mahesh Sharma, who is Minister of Tourism sought to blame rape and sexual harassment on the victims once again!
The tourism minister warned that female visitors and tourists traveling to the India should desist from wearing skirts “for their own safety.”
There has been a lot of backlash following the minister’s comments but this is, however, not the first time Mahesh Sharma has publicly thrown around such sentiments.
In 2015, the Minister drew heat from the international community after he stated that “women going out at night might be acceptable for elsewhere, but it is not part of Indian culture.”
With these recent insecurities for women in India, tourism in the country has dropped by a whooping 25%.
