Five Cameroonian athletes have gone missing in the village of the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, reports our colleagues from “Independent”. They would have fled the Games Village to stay in Australia.
According to Cameroon team manager Victor Agbor Nso, weightlifters Olivier Matam, Aka Angeline Filji and Mikoumba Petit David as well as boxers Ndzie Tchoyi and Simplice Fotsala were to compete on Tuesday but they never showed up.
David Grevemberg, the managing director of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said it was disappointing that they did not show up.
“But these athletes are guests here in Australia, they are still under their visas and they have the right to travel freely.”
“At the moment, we are concerned about safety and well-being and we take it seriously. We are monitoring the situation closely with the Cameroon team, “he added.
This is not the first time that Cameroonian athletes have gone missing at a major sporting event.
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, 9 Cameroonian athletes had disappeared and at the London 2012 Olympic Games, 7 athletes ran away.
Instead of 42 at the start, the Cameroonian team is now made up of 37 athletes.
