Serena Williams is one of the best tennis players in the world. Currently, the 34-year-old is ranked first in women’s singles – a position that she’s held on five other separate occasions. Serena secured her first world No. 1 singles title in 2002, at the age of 21. Since then, she’s been obliterating her opponents and breaking long standing records.
Together with her sister Venus, Serena has been credited with launching a new era of power tennis in the women’s game. This year, Serena also holds the accolade of being the highest paid female athlete in the world – earning nearly $30 million in prize money and endorsements. Her total net worth is estimated at a modest $160 million.
Much of Serena’s tennis success can be attributed to her early start in the sport. Born to tennis coach Richard Williams, the sisters were destined for greatness since the very start. Serena first picked up a tennis racket when she was just three years old, and has been mastering the game ever since.
With the help of her father, Serena developed an unmatched (and feared) playing style. She quickly became known for her incredible serve – a rare combination of power and extreme accuracy. Her serve is often referred to as the greatest in women’s tennis history – with a deadly peak speed of 128.6 mph.
Getting an early start in tennis allowed Serena to try her luck at the professional level when she was just 14 years old. She made her professional debut in 1995, but unfortunately her career had a rough start. That year, Williams was eliminated in the first round of qualifying matches.
Over the next few years, she polished off her game, and her luck began to change. Quickly, Williams clawed her way to the top and began rivaling some of the sports’ greatest. Since the start of her career, Serena managed to keep up an impeccable record. Her current standing is 304-42 in grand slam singles, which is only two wins behind the historical world record of 306. On top of her incredible win percentage, Serena also holds 94 combined singles and doubles titles – and her career is far from over.
Serena’s outstanding career, along with her easily marketable personality, net the tennis star an impressive $160 million in prize money and endorsement deals. Thanks to her nest egg, Williams has access to virtually any luxury that her heart desires, and the athlete isn’t afraid to spend.
She’s a proud owner of a gigantic beach home in West Palm Beach, Florida. The mega mansion was purchased for $2 million in 2009, but since then, the home more than doubled in value. Complete with 4 large bedrooms and more living space than you can imagine, the home is truly the “talk of the town.”
Surprisingly, there is no tennis court on the property, but the estate itself is located inside the Ballen Isles Country Club, which houses more than enough professional tennis courts.
In Serena’s garage you will find a fully upgraded Bentley Continental. Although she could certainly afford to own a fleet of luxurious vehicles, it seems that the Williams’ sisters aren’t too obsessed with materialistic things.
That said, Serena loves to dress well – and she obviously has the money to spend on designer clothing and accessories. She’s usually spotted rocking brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, and of course – Birkin.
Serena is also a huge philanthropist at heart, and she supports at least a dozen charities. She’s publicly associated with nonprofits like: Hearts of Gold, World Education, Small Steps Project, and many others.
The athlete is also a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, and a founder of her own nonprofit – Serena Williams Fund, which sets out to help individuals affected by senseless violence as well as provide financial assistance to underprivileged youth.
