Footballers have often been accused of not planning for their retirement. Horror stories abound of those that have gone from riches to rags. Times are changing however.

Despite their flamboyant lifestyles and enviable collection of cars and mansions, African players have become more savvy, with many starting various business ventures to see them through the retirement years.

Here are five African footballers with retirement on their minds.

Sulley Muntari has converted his love of cars into a business venture. The former AC Milan and Internationale midfielder has made former teammates his clientele. Not a bad strategy.

Nwankwo Kanu: Real estate mogul

One of the most decorated Super Eagles players Kanu is probably best known for his charity which assist children with heart conditions. But Kanu’s Hardley apartments in Lagos are a savvy investment in a country where real estate values never seem to find a trough.

Although the property has experienced challenging times recently, it is nevertheless an investment sure to help Papilo through retirement.

Frédéric Kanouté: Coaching future stars

Some players feel the need to contribute back to a sport that gave them so much… and make money, of course. Kanouté has an academy programme run in Dubai that does just that.

With registration at a cost of nearly $1000 per child for 11 weeks in an oil rich nation. This is sure to reinforce Kanoute’s retirement war chest.

The Chelsea midfielder was born in Plateau State in Nigeria, a place known for producing musical stars. It is with this in mind that Mikel hopes to unearth the next Nigerian lyrical geniuses.
